Thanks !!
Thanks to Ben Joplin (WB5VST) for an interesting presentation on APRS in our April Meeting.
For those that were watching the last game of March Madness, APRS equipment and software use 1200 baud AX.25 data packets on 144.390 MHz to send short messages back and forth.
While vehicle tracking is the typical knee-jerk definition of APRS, it can do a lot more like:
a) get your home weather station on the air.
b) send short text messages to another ham
c) send short emails when you’re out of cell data service range
d) get your position overlayed on NOAA weather radars
etc.
More to follow.

School Club Roundup
KF5CRF will be active at their school in Lawton OK, from 0900 – 1500 or 1500 to 2100 UTC. These are the same students that go to the park and work with K5USA on Saturdays doing Amateur Radio Outreach. Look for KF5CRF about 14.321 from Tuesday through Friday for as long as the students can hold the frequency.
There have been reports from a reputable source that due to the weather the Ada Hamfest has been canceled for Saturday February 5th , 2010. The Ada Ham fest does not seem to have a website but this message has been sent out over several mailing list by KE5BAL Vance A.Smith of Ardmore, OK., President of S.O.A.R.E.S.S.S . Please pass this message on to anyone who may have been planning to attend.
Listen for Nanosail-D
http://www.onorbit.com/node/2853
excerpt:
Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 11:30 a.m. EST, engineers at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., confirmed that the NanoSail-D nanosatellite ejected from Fast Affordable Scientific and Technology Satellite, FASTSAT. The ejection event occurred spontaneously and was identified this morning when engineers at the center analyzed onboard FASTSAT telemetry. The ejection of NanoSail-D also has been confirmed by ground-based satellite tracking assets.
Amateur ham operators are asked to listen for the signal to verify NanoSail-D is operating. This information should be sent to the NanoSail-D dashboard at: http://nanosaild.engr.scu.edu/dashboard.htm. The NanoSail-D beacon signal can be found at 437.270 MHz.
After a long break, the Leonard Mountain Repeaters are back On The Air!
As of Friday evening, Earl WB5UUW has managed to get both the VHF and the UHF repeaters back up and running. The VHF Repeater was received, for the second time, on Friday Morning, after having been repaired twice from Vertex, the Manufacture.
The VHF Repeater is running two separate antennas at this time. Once the Repeater was re installed, the “Cans” would not pass any output. It was determined that the cans were out of tune. Because of the two antennas, the output has been lowered to 8 Watts output, to try and equalize the Receive and the Transmit coverage areas.
The Cans have been removed from the hill, with the plan of having them retuned to the proper frequency. Once back in Tune, the cans will be reinstalled, and assuming that all goes well, the repeater will go back to normal full power, all on one antenna.
The UHF Repeater is fully up and rearing to go, with no further issues known. Its coverage range is nearly to Oklahoma City.
Please give them a try, and if you would like, send signal reports to Earl WB5UUW or my self, KF5IF. We are particularly looking for Low power / DX reports as to the coverage area.
73′s & Happy New Year!
