Nominating Committee – Help Needed

By: Scott Haley KD5NJR

It’s that time again to start thinking about who you’d like to lead the Broken Arrow Amateur Radio Club in 2012 and beyond.

I am term-limited for the office of President and can not run again.

If you’d like to sit on a nominating committee or if you’d like to throw your hat in the ring, let Bruce K5PX or myself know.

Keep an eye out on the DX-Sherlock website.  It’s easy to use…

Look at the favorable 10m skip.

Here comes a Monster Sunspot….

MAGNIFICENT SUNSPOT: One of the largest sunspots in years is rotating over the sun’s northeastern limb. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of AR1339 during the early hours of Nov. 3rd:

Measuring some 40,000 km wide and at least twice that in length, the sprawling sunspot group is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Two or three of the sunspot’s dark cores are wider than Earth itself.

Naturally, such a large sunspot has potential for strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. One such eruption has already occured: An M4-flare at 2200 UT on Nov. 2nd produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation (SDO movie) and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead.

Hey guys,

We’re back on track with our regular club meetings this Monday Night November 7 at the Community Center.  1500 S. Main.  7p start time.  Brief business meeting followed by a talk about ARES and Emergency Communications from Brian Gnad, KB5TSI.

Hopefully we’ll have some pictures or discussion about the Enid Hamfest (this Saturday) and a few folks will have an item or two for show and tell.

The Christmas Party is just a month out, so stay tuned for the final details.  December 5.  6:30 at Uncle Buck’s (Bass Pro Shop).  Keep your eyes open for a “dirty Santa” type of gift.  Doesn’t have to be big or expensive, but something useful would be nice.  solder, zip ties, a small tool or the like.

Don’t forget about Echolink on 444.000 and the nets on 146.910 .  See what’s happening around town on 144.390 (1200 baud APRS packet) or on www.findu.com and search for Broken Arrow .

Green Country Hamfest

By: Scott Haley KD5NJR

… it’s not too early ….

Green Country Hamfest
Claremore, Oklahoma
Friday and Saturday, March 9th & 10th, 2012

Again, for the second year in a row, we’ll do the Uncle Buck’s restaurant at Bass Pro Shop.  I had a great time last year.  As I recall, Santa even came through with some candy canes toward the end of the evening.

Bass Pro is between Elm and Lynn Lane on 61st in Broken Arrow.

December 5 @ 6:30.

Yeah, bring something for the Dirty Santa Gift Exchange.  It doesn’t have to be something expensive, but atleast make it useful to the ham radio hobby.  There are a lot of cool things you can find for cheap  … alligator clips, small tools, a pack of batteries, wire, solder, so on and so forth.

More details to follow.

Thanks for John KN5UPS for doing the leg work on this one.
